1) Historians often debate the legacy of the 1848 revolutions, and whether the revolutions were actually successful in achieving any lasting impact. Select a country (France, Germany, or Austria) and explain why you think 1848 did or did not lead to any lasting changes. You can also discuss the rights and role of women in your answer.

2) Large parts of Europe underwent major changes during the 19th century, however, not everyone did. What happened or didn't happen in Russia? Why didn't Russia experience the same type of political and economic modernization? Hint: Read Chapt of the textbook.

3) How would you assess the Communist Manifesto? What are the most positive and most troubling features of the document? For instance, you might want to consider the 10-point program (near end of excerpt in module's readings), or Marx's thesis that "The history of all hitherto existing societies is the history of class struggles."
