Questions
Please answer each question while reading Chapter. Your answers should be well thought out and detailed, including a summary and strengths and weaknesses.
1.) How will the population structure of minority groups change in the years ahead? What effect will this have on the family, health care, and social service needs in these communities?
2.) Compare and contrast the multiple jeopardy, levelling, and life course perspectives on minority aging. What does each theory tell us about ethnicity and aging, what are the limitations of each theory? Present studies to support your discussion. What factors, other than ethnicity (e.g., group structure, size, time of immigration, past discrimination, etc.), influence minority group members' experience of aging?
3.) What issues do the four minority groups discussed in the text have in common? Why do some groups seem to do better than others in terms of economic status and health?
4.) Describe the role of the family in the minority groups discussed in the text. Why is it risky to romanticize the strength of the minority family? Why is it risky to assume that all families give support to their older members?
