Assignment:
One of the central arguments of General Strain Theory (GST) is that individuals that experience elevated amounts of stress are more likely to engage in a host of negative deviant coping mechanisms as a means of alleviating the negative emotional states (e.g., anger, depression, anxiety) that result from the stress/strain. Nowhere is this issue more prevalent than in the workplace. We invariably find that occupational stress is a primary source of strain, and has been linked to a host of negative behavioral outcomes, including intimate partner violence. Fortunately, Wave IV of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health) has measures of occupational stress - particularly, occupational stress that results from family-related responsibilities - and intimate partner violence.
In particular, I have provided some printouts from the codebook that shows the frequency distributions of the attributes comprising these three measures of family-induced occupational strain, and three-measures of intimate partner violence perpetration. Let's assume that you were tasked with assessing the relationship between these two variables, and you need to develop a method for operationalizing these variables. Students are to discuss the procedures they would use to create composite measures (scales) for both occupational strain and interpersonal violence. In particular, describe the variables that you will use to create each scale (pretty obvious), and more importantly the manner in which they will be operationalized.
a. How will the occupational strain scale be created (what variables will you use to create those scales), and what procedure would you use in SPSS to create the scale?
b. Are you going to recode any of the occupational strain variables? Why or why not?
c. If so, describe in detail how will you recode the occupational strain variables, and defend your decision.
d. How will the intimate partner violence scale be created (what variables will you use to create those scales).?
e. Describe the method in which you will create the scale (procedure you would use in SPSS).
f. Will any of the individual indicators need to be recoded? Why or why not?
g. If so, describe in detail how you will recode the IPV measures.
h. Pertaining to reliability, how will you assess these properties of your scales (describe the procedures, or tests that you would use to assess reliability)?
i. Pertaining to validity, how will you assess this property of your scales? Do you think that you have a valid measure for your scales?
