Among the many theorists that influenced cognitive psychology, Jean Piaget stands out for his work in child cognitive development.

Jean Piaget's theory of cognitive development was that children progress through different stages of intellectual development as they learn about the world. These stages are characterized by differences that are measured by quality, not quantity, in how children think, reason, and understand their environment.

Two major events in the 1950s and 1960s were that 1950s saw increasing dissatisfaction with behaviorism's focus on observable behavior and its neglect of internal mental processes, such as thinking, memory, and language, and as time continues on the advancement in computer science is leading to the development of cognitive psychology.

Cognitive psychology helps explain how social situations can influence an individual's thoughts and behaviors. For example, a feeling of discomfort when holding contradictory beliefs.
