Model Paragraph: This student received 100% on their submission.
In his treatise entitled "Defense of the Indians," the Spanish intellectual Bartolomé de Las Casas argued that Europeans should attempt to civilize the Native Americans by teaching them Christian values. In 1550, Bartolomé de Las Casas responded to claims by Juan Gines de Sepulveda about the inferiority of the Natives of the Americas. He presented the following argument, "The Indian race is not that barbaric, nor are they dull witted or stupid, but they are easy to teach and very talented in learning all the liberal arts, and very ready to accept, honor, and observe the Christian religion and correct their sins (as experience has taught) once priests have introduced them to the sacred mysteries and taught them the work of God." According to de las Casas, the Native Americans are not as barbaric, or primitive and unsophisticated, as people might think.
In fact, he claims that the Natives are capable of reason and learning. Moreover, he suggests that they can learn quickly and adapt to European ways of life, especially the Christian religion. As an aside, de las Casas points out that his statements are based not only on observation but also experience. He implies that the seeming error or barbarity of Native ways is a side-effect of their isolation not lack of their ability to be civilized. Based on his analysis of the Natives as capable of embracing Christianity and rectifying their sins, de las Casas implies that the correct course of action is to educate the Natives rather than destroy their civilization. De las Casas thus believes that Natives should be treated as lost souls who require guidance rather than as animals to be enslaved or killed.
