Mercy is finalising recruiting of one new staff member for the Artificial Intelligence component of the project. She has two candidates, Rachel, an experience Artificial Intelligence expert who has all the technical skills but lack non-technical skills such as problem solving, team work and listening. However, June is not an expert in Artificial Intelligence although she knows the basics and is able to develop Artificial Intelligence techniques. June possesses strong business acumen, is able to negotiate with customers, liaise with team members and management, solve problems, work as part of a team and engage in effective listening. Mary has decided to go June.

James and Sam are both employed on the Do Well project. Sam arrives early on a daily basis, ensures that his tasks are completed and sends his report to Mercy, the project manager at the end of the day. However, James needs to be reminded on a weekly basis by Mercy that he needs to complete his task on time in order to apply for the next promotion.

1. Discuss briefly, the main type of power Mercy exerted on James in order to get the job done.

2. Both James and Sam have shown different types of motivation (intrinsic and extrinsic). Explain in details using examples how one employee displayed signs of extrinsic motivation and how the other employee displayed signs of intrinsic motivation.
