Assignment:

Historically, Native peoples of this land, now called the United States (US), have been viewed (through a western lens) as both an impediment to western expansion and an enemy to vanquish in the name of civilization. Following their subjugation, Native peoples were treated as children in a paternalistic system that manifested itself through numerous failed US policies. You have been presented with information this semester that presents US history through a Native Lens.

Utilizing, specific examples primarily from class notes beginning with pre-contact Native civilizations, colonial era Native voices and events through the 19th century, as well as modern (20th and 21st century) Native voices, construct a narrative of US history that privileges diverse Native voices. In addition, utilize specific examples from the notes that demonstrate how Native peoples responded to the cataclysmic changes forced upon them. In other words, how would that narrative differ from the traditional US narrative?

Your response should be at minimum 4 full pages.
