Two interesting cases involving punishing high school students for their speech help demonstrate what 1st amendment rights of free speech can be regulated by school administrators (your book goes into much further detail). The case of Frederick v. Morse involved a suspended student who held a sign on a school trip saying "bong hits for Jesus" humorously advocating smoking marijuana was held to be suspended properly by the court. However, in Tinker v. Des Moines the court ruled the symbolic speech of black armbands worn to protest the Vietnam War could not be punished as it didn't disrupt the educational mission of the school. Discuss the following:

How much power do you believe school administrators should have in regulating high school speech (use an example)? Do you believe a great a mount of power to restrict student speech helps minors, and their fellow students, in getting a better education? What about traditional college age people (18-23), how much power should school administrators have in regulating their 1st Amendment rights to free speech? Would regulated speech in college help college students as the courts believe it does high school? (note - in general college students are considered adults and not held to high school legal standards on free speech restriction?
