Assignment:

For this discussion I would like you to think about the power that the South held in the early Republic. Literally, out of the first 7 presidents, 5 came from the South, 2 out of the first 4 supreme court chief justices came from the South (including John Marshall), 7 out of the first 14 speakers of the house of representatives came from the South.

Also, one of the major sticking points over the ratification of the new U.S. constitution was the issue of slavery, which resulted in the three-fifths compromise and the end of the Atlantic slave trade in 1808. How much power did southerners actually have? What role did cotton and the expansion of slavery westward play for this type of influence in the U.S.? What conditions led to the South becoming more focused on southern issues, which resulted in the harking of the now politically and racially charged term "states rights?"
