Assignment:

Respond to a colleague by providing respectful feedback on their plan for the family session. Identify one to two unique factors in the case that may make planning a session difficult. Learning Resources to support your posts/ citations and a reference list.

Colleague post

As I begin my session with Sarah and Stephanie, I will first want to establish some soft ground rules so that both parties will be able to speak when it's their turn. Next, I will assure them that my office is a safe space, and I will go over confidentiality with them both. Toseland & Rivas (2017) state that the purpose of the assessment or clinical interview is to learn as much as possible about the clients. While everything is calm ill gather as much background information as I can by asking probing question to gain as much knowledge as I can. I would also inquire about the family's goals for the meeting, what kinds of things they would like to talk about.

Questions I would ask Sarah.

  • Do you have trouble discarding (or recycling, selling, or giving away) things that most other people would get rid of?
  • Because of the clutter or number of possessions, how difficult is it to use the rooms and surfaces in your home?
  • To what extent do your acquisition and clutter affect your daily functioning?
  • How much do these symptoms interfere with your social or family life?
  • How do you feel when Stephanie's attempt to organize things

Questions for Stephanie:

  • How do you feel?
  • Are you taking your medications?
  • How is your relationship with your mom? Personal?
  • Are you psychotic, anxious, manic, or depressed?

Questions for Both:

  • Are you able to recognize each other's specific triggers?
  • Do you think you both can compromises when It comes to the house?

I would engage them by building adequate report with them. Recognizing and respecting that each family is unique, so by focusing on their strengths, learning about their histories, identities, and heritages, and delivering services that meet their distinct needs. Being the common denominator in the room will provide the support that they both need without crossing any boundaries. The common conflict that I can foresee is Stephanie waling out a lot until she gets the courage to stay and Sarah shutting down when Stephanie speaks until she feels comfortable expressing how she feels and expressing why is so hard for her to get rid of the things in her home.
