A 1000 cubic yard embankment is to be built using soil from a borrow pit. The properties of embankment and the borrow pit soil are given below:
Embankment: Dry unit weight = 115 pcf; Water content = 15%
Borrow pit: Moist unit weight = 115 pcf; Water content = 10%
Use 2.68 for the specific gravity of soil
Required:
a. How many cubic yards of soil must be excavated from the borrow pit?
b. How many gallons of water must be added to increase the water content to 15% in the embankment?
Air can be assumed as a di-atomic ideal gas. Find the final temperature and the amount of work ( in kW) required for air compression at a rate of 100 mol/s , from an initial condition of 1 bar an 25 C to 10 bar; for the following ways:
Soil material is being assessed as a possible liner for a sanitary landfill. A soil core was collected and brought to the laboratory. A 10-cm tall section of soil has 2 cm of water continuously ponded on it. The area of the core surface is 78 cm^2..
determine the location of the center of gravity of the cast aluminum block
A person with a mass of 200kg wearing snow skis is gliding down a long slope at an angle of 20 degrees. Each ski is 200cm long and 5 cm wide. The pressure of the skis on the snow melts a thin layer of water so that a
Water enters a very wide rectangular channel (Manning's n = 0.0149) at a velocity of 12.2 ms-1 and a depth of 0.61 m. An H3 curve forms downstream and the water jumps to a depth of 2.4 m some distance downstream.
Draw the shearing force diagram and the moment diagram of the following problem. The beam is indeterminate. You need to integrate the moment twice to get a formula for the deflection v(x).
What is the composition of this last remaining liquid phase?
it was observed that the quantity of the water flowing through the sand layer into the collection ditch is 250 m^3/day. What is the hydraulic conductivity of the sand (k)
The air pressure is 120 KPa, the air temperatuer is 28 degrees C, and the dew point is 20 degrees C. Calculate the corresponding vapor pressure (ea) and relative humidity (RH). Assume Atmospheric pressure is 101,000 Pa.
A multiple-piston hydraulic jack has two output pistons, each with an area of 250 cm^2. The input piston, whose area is 25 cm^2, is concerned to a lever that has a mechanical advantage of 9:1.
Discuss the dangers of optimization in terms of minimum section to support loads. In other words, how would optimizing for bending stresses affect the shear capacity of a section
The fluid pressure in the screen of a piezometer in a saline aquifer is 7.688 x 10^5 N/m^2. The fluid density is 1055 kg/m^3 and the temperature is 14 degrees C. The elevation of the piezometer screen is 45.9 m above sea level.
