The flow from a groundwater well in New Jersey is 1400 gallons per minute (gpm) and will be used for drinking water. The water will be treated with granular activated carbon (GAC) pressure filters. Testing has already been completed on the water and the Usage Rate for the carbon is 0.4 pounds of carbon per 1000 gallons of water treated. The required EBCT is 20 minutes and the carbon longevity must be at least 6 months. The carbon will be Calgon Filtrasorb 400 with a wetted and drained weight of 30 pounds per cubic foot (lbs.jcf). How many pressure contactors will be required? What are the options for the spent carbon? How is the spent carbon removed from the pressure contactors?
