Social Learning Theory and Critical Criminology offer different ways to understand why people commit crimes. Social Learning Theory explains that people learn criminal behavior through interactions with others. When someone regularly spends time with peers who break the law, they're more likely to imitate that behavior, especially if it's rewarded or not punished (Akers & Jennings, 2009). Over time, these learned behaviors become part of how a person views the world and reacts to situations.
Critical Criminology, on the other hand, looks at crime through the lens of power and inequality. It argues that laws are often made to protect those in power, while people with less power face harsher policing and punishment (Friedrichs, 2009). This theory is useful for highlighting systemic injustice, but it doesn't fully explain how individuals come to commit crimes in the first place.
Social Control Theory adds another important perspective by focusing on the role of social bonds. People who have strong connections to family, school, or their community are less likely to engage in crime, while those with weak or broken bonds are more at risk (Schreck & Hirschi, 2009). However, this theory mainly explains why people don't commit crimes rather than how they learn to do so. In contrast, Social Learning Theory addresses both the causes and continuation of criminal behavior.
Evidence also supports the value of Social Learning Theory. For example, research has shown that police officers working in departments where misconduct was common were more likely to engage in similar behaviors, following patterns shaped by peer influence and social norms (Chappell, 2004). Even in professional environments, people tend to adopt the behaviors they see around them. This supports the idea that crime is often a learned behavior shaped by social context.
