Assignment:

Why is it important to note that slavery became a minor issue in the public's memory of the Civil War? How does this affect the progress, or lack thereof, that African Americans can make in the future? How important is that memory in other historical events?

I've used this question in discussion in the past, but it seems particularly relevant today. The issues of civil rights, protest, and historical memory are discussed and debated by both political parties, but I don't think either side really presents any concrete solutions that speak to the roots of the problems.
