Be sure to offer examples and to cite at least two assigned sources from Unit 2 in your response.
- In her article "Construction of an Enemy," Eleanor Stein describes moments in U.S. history when specific racial or ethnic groups have been singled out as "enemies," including members who were U.S. citizens. In what ways have people of Asian descent experienced hostility during moments of crisis in the U.S.? Be sure to offer specific examples and to cite at least two assigned sources from Unit 2 in your response.
- How does James Baldwin's discussion of the process of "becoming white" compare to Min Zhou's analysis of Americans of Asian descent "becoming white"? What does "white" as a social construction mean to each author? Refer to specific examples from both essays to support your response.
- Compare the impacts of immigration for European communities as described by Baldwin with the more recent experiences of immigrants from Africa and the Caribbean as described by Berlin. What choices do these different communities face as they adopt the United States as a new home? Refer to specific examples from both essays to support your response.
- In their chapter "Race and Ethnicity," Conerly, Holmes, Tamang, et. al. (2021) identify six types of intergroup relationships (pp. 301-304). Identify and discuss two of these six types of intergroup relationships. Be sure to give at least one example from U.S. history for each type you discuss and to reference at least two sources from Unit 2 in your response.
- How have science and medicine play a role in the racialization and subjugation of nonwhite Americans? How have communities of color viewed health care advocacy as a way to address racial inequality, and what implications might this have for healthcare practitioners working with these communities? Be sure to offer at least two specific examples and to cite at least two assigned sources from Unit 2 in your response.
