Status seems to be a major factor in any type of setting either in the workplace or in life generally speaking. Especially within a group or team setting that is being formed early on from the beginning. Status of one self can be related to first impression of a person or persons. If can be seen through diversity differences such as race, gender, age and demeanor and some through to the title of someone's ranking within their job or the length of their education.
When it comes to status competition, this is where the process by which people acquire the authority and legitimacy to influence their team (Thompson, 2014). Even in teams with established status roles, status competition can emerge as certain members attempt to compete with the leader or for leader's attention and or approval (Thompson, 2014).
I have encountered this type of competition daily within my workplace, especially on the current project that I lead for the state of Florida. Now the competition is not a diversity issue or who is better than who. But you can certainly feel the level of competition between groups and how level employees tend to use their influence with managers to gain advancement with the group and work place.
Manger have a great advantage with status competition. In my experience and sometimes personally I tend to go above and beyond to be on the same level as the leaders in my group. I may not be paid the same but I look for the same acceptance and approval. I tend to think it's a higher level of confidence that I carry. But with that being said managers can use the eagerness to their advantage to improve overall group and team standards by raising the bar for the rest of the group while producing high level work and function work groups within departments.
