Case: The American eugenics movement in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries sought to rid society of genetic and social ills by weeding out "degenerate" genes from the American gene pool. By 1920, several states had passed laws which gave them the authority to forcibly sterilize individuals they classified as unfit to breed (often called "feebleminded" or "imbeciles"), all in the name of civic responsibility.
In 1924, American eugenicists decided to test the constitutionality of eugenic laws in an effort to placate critics. A Virginia case involving Carrie Buck, an unmarried, pregnant seventeen-year old, was selected to be heard by the Supreme Court
