Question: In 1963, African-American leaders fighting for civil rights organized and led what came to be known as the March on Washington. The demonstration was intended to raise awareness for a variety of challenges African-Americans faced, including segregation in the South, discrimination by employers, a lack of enriching education, and poverty. One of the most memorable moments of this March was Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s famous "I Have a Dream" speech. This speech, the meaning of which extends far beyond its title, was delivered on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial one hundred years, as Dr. King pointed out, after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation into law, legislation that officially freed all African-Americans held in slavery in the South. In the midst of the Civil War and lacking real authority over the states of the Confederation, the Proclamation was then, and continued to be, a moment of symbolic significance for African-Americans in the United States.
Watch Dr. King's "I Have a Dream" speech and discuss:
How does Dr. King describe African-Americans' lives in the United States at this time?
What goals does Dr. King wish to achieve, as he states them in this speech?
How does Dr. King's statement reflect some of the goals of other African-American activists we have learned about in this course?
