Question: Your book discusses the fact that a growing amount of high school students lack sufficient amounts of sleep. According to a study by Mary Carskadon and her colleagues, an adolescent will sleep "an average of 9 hours and 25 minutes a night" (Santrock, p. 266). Also, many other studies would recommend that adolescents receive somewhere between 8-9 hours of sleep per night on the weeknights. However, a growing amount of high school students are not receiving the recommended amount of sleep. Did you receive the recommended amount of sleep when you were in high school? What factors contributed to you either getting a good night's sleep or not getting a good night's sleep during this time period? How do you think that impacted your development in high school?
