Discussion Post: Sociology

Focuses on Deviance and Social Control. In sociology we view deviance as being "socially constructed". That means that deviance is not inherent in any act, it is determined by the culture. That is because the strict definition of deviance is a violation of norms. And we know norms change between societies and within societies over time. For example: a girl wearing a bikini. Is this a norm violation (deviant)? Well, it depends on if she is wearing the bikini at the beach...or at the opera! So, the act (wearing the bikini) doesn't tell us whether it is deviant or not; we need the social context to tell us that.... Get the instant assignment help.

Given this, how do you think deviance is constructed in society? Where do these norms (and norm violations) come from? Why is it deviant to wear the bikini at the opera but not the beach? There is no biological, natural, genetic reason why men can't wear dresses to work, but it would certainly be deviant in the U.S. So... How do these norms and violations come to be?Discussion #2-This Discussion Board Forum relates to Social Class and Stratification. Discuss how, as sociologists, we should define "social class". Keep in mind two things: 1) it must be an intellectually useful definition that we can apply to everyday life; and 2) it must be something we can measure if we wanted to do research on social class. (In other words, "upper class people are those who dress well" is not very useful, since we might have different definitions of "dress well"...)
