Task 1
Following structure is a 2- dimensional arch which can be used in a similar application as above. The joints all lie on radial lines subtending angles of 15° as indicated, and the curved members act as two-force members. Distance DC = OA = DB = R.
1.1 How do you analyze the curved members
1.2 Determine the reactions at the points A and B
1.3 Determine the force in member DG and FC of the compound truss.
Estimate the amount of depression storage (inches and cubic feet) in a 6-arce parking lot using the following rainfall and discharge data. The discharge data were measured at the only outlet in the parking lot.
Refrigerant 134a enters the condenser of a residential heat pump at 800 kPa and 35 degrees celcius at a rate of 0.018 kg/s and leaves at 800 kPa as a saturated liquid. If the compressor consumes 1.2 kW of power, determine a) the COP of the heat pump ..
A chemical engineer is considering two styles of pipes for moving distillate from a refinery to the tank farm. A small pipeline will cost less to purchase (including valves and other appurtenances)
Calculate the percent voids between aggregate particles, which have been compacted by rodding, if the dry-rodded unit weight is 88.0 lb/cu ft and the bulk dry specific gravity is 2.701.
Steam enters the turbine of a single vapor power plant with a pressure of 10 MPa and a temperature of 580 C and expands adiabatically to 6 kPa. The isentropic turbine efficiency is 85%. Saturated liquid exits the condenser at 6 kPa and the isentropic..
A layer of normally consolidated clay has been filled with 2m of gravel at a unit weight of 17kN/m3 for a long period of time and the settlement of the clay layer monitored giving a total final settlement of 330mm.
The relative density of a sloped sand deposit is known to be 75%. Water is observed to be seeped through this slope at a rate such that the discharge velocity is 0.6 m/day. If the hydraulic conductivity for this deposit is 4×10-4 m/s.
The moist unit weight of a soil is 119.5 pcf. For a moisture content of 12% and Gs=2.65, calculate the following;
A car is traveling up a 3% grade on a road that has good, wet pavement. The engine is running at 2500 rpm. The radius of the wheels is 15 inches, the driveline slipage is 3% and the overall gear reduction ratio is 2.5 to 1
Determine the minimum length of a sag vertical curve if the grades are ?4% and +2%. Design speed is 70 mph. State assumptions used, consider the following criteria:
A culvert is to be constructed in a bed of sand (e = 0.5) for drainage purposes. The foof of the culvert will be located 3 m below ground surface. Currently the groundwater level is at ground surface.
Three solid shafts, each of 3/4 in. diameter, are connected by the gears shown. Knowing that G=11.2*10^6 psi, determine (a) the angle through which end A of shaft AB rotates, (b) the angle through which end E of shaft EF rotates.
