Assignment:
1. Following the 9/11 attacks, lawmakers in the United States and other nations passed legislation to make it more difficult for such an assault to take place in their nations. The United and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act, or USA PATRIOT Act, was passed into law and provided law enforcement with the means to battle and track down prospective terrorists. The USA FREEDOM (Uniting and Strengthening America by Fulfilling Rights and Ensuring Effective Discipline Over Monitoring) Act, which President Barack Obama signed into law in 2015, superseded this. Chapter addresses this topic.
Many believe that the Patriot Act had provisions that made it easier for law enforcement to lawfully spy on their own population without adequate checks and balances to prevent misuse.
Cover some of the expansive and outmoded provisions of the Patriot Act or Freedom Act. What other nations have broad laws like this one that lack effective checks and balances?
Are our liberties being forfeited if laws like these are upheld, and may this make us resemble nations with considerably tighter government control over the populace?
2. Explain the three to four key components of the selection, induction, and socialization of police officers that are necessary for them to be suitably trained for today's law enforcement careers.
How do these procedures equip officers to carry out the patrol role, deal with the pressure of shifting shifts and beats, and connect and communicate with a population that is varied and changing?
