Assignment:

Reflecting on this Competing Viewpoints, as well as the chapter, answer the following question. Marx and Tocqueville both understood the June Days as a class revolution, with the working class protesting the power and wealth of the bourgeoisie in 1848 France. Both also recognized that this was a failed revolution. How did they account for the failure of the June Days?

Marx and Tocqueville recognized that the military of France was just so strong that the working-class protesters simply had no chance to fight against them. Marx and Tocqueville suggest that class-based antagonisms had always come second to political antagonisms like hereditary status and monarchy in France, leading the working class to be largely left out. By the time the working class pushed back, the power of the middle class was too strong in the wake of a new political order. Marx and Tocqueville explained that the working class lacked the intelligence to be able to organize itself and fight back.
