Brief answers to these questions. Based On Western civilization chapter 8 and 9.

How did the Church deal with the many patterns of belief and differences of faith which cropped up from time to time during the Middle Ages? Was a strong hand needed to keep the people from straying from the fold, or were the Church too authoritarian and too brutal in its methods against so-called heretics?

Is this a case where some authoritarianism is justified? Should the faith of the majority be allowed to impose its will on the daily lives of others with different or no faith at all?
