Read the scenario and then answer the questions related to it.
Manoj lives independently in the community and has a case worker, Aisha. One day when Aisha was doing a visit with Manoj, she asks him about the various services she has arranged for him, and if everything was OK with them. Manoj tells her that he is not happy with the recreation service that he attends. Manoj says that now that he is 55 years old he no longer wants to do the active and busy activities he once did. Manoj asks Aisha if she can help him to make a complaint. Aisha speaks with Manoj to gather as much information as she can about the specific needs of Manoj that are currently not being met by the service. Manoj also tells Aisha that she can ask his sister, who knows that he has been unhappy.
Aisha calls Manoj's sister, and speaks with her about the issues that Manoj has. Manoj's sister stated her concerns to Aisha and said she would be willing to be involved if needed. Aisha also did some research on other local recreation organisations to see if other services may provide the service that Manoj is looking for, however none of them do.
Aisha and Manoj then decide that it would be good for Manoj to present his concerns to the manager of the recreation service. Aisha and Manoj talk about:
- how Manoj could speak to the manager of the recreation service;
- the important information to be stated to the manager,
- how to say what he wants to say, and
- potential responses to questions that the manager might ask.
Aisha and Manoj practiced scenarios of what might occur in the meeting, with Aisha role playing the part of the manager, to give Manoj practice at speaking on the topic.
Aisha typed the information her and Manoj had discussed and printed it in large font and simple language for Manoj to use when he has his meeting with the manager. Aisha assisted Manoj to make a meeting time with the manager. Aisha and Manoj went together to the meeting. Manoj spoke on his own behalf, but if he got stuck for words, he would look at Aisha, and she would then speak quietly with Manoj to help him word what he had to say. Manoj would then respond to the manager himself after this assistance from Aisha.
At the end, Aisha documented all of her processes as she went and wrote a comprehensive report for her supervisor.
