Throughout history, we have learned that females are the weak gender. There have been queens, but never without a king. There have been male presidents but only a few female presidents. Women are fragile and sentimental. That is what history, and this article, are telling us anyway. "After many studies conducted over the years, it has been shown that women suffer more from anxiety than men." (Journal of Abnormal Psychology, 1998). Analyzing the way that women have been perceived and treated since the years B.C., makes it simple to understand why the female gender reports anxiety at a higher level than the male gender. The casual factors are various, but the main one may be the way in which society favors men in most aspects. This really is a man's world. Women are expected to always be dependent on a man (her husband, her father). If a woman becomes an independent adult with the means to become successful, then that woman might be seen as less capable of being a good mother and a good wife; as if those roles were the only roles that women are meant to be part of. In addition, women experience more physical and sexual trauma than men; almost two-thirds of women suffer physical or sexual violence in their lifetime. Women are more likely to be raped or sexually assaulted and may thus be predisposed to develop acute or posttraumatic stress, agoraphobia, or other anxiety-related disorders. Men and women suffer from anxiety, but men tend to have more flexibility in the way in which they deal with it. It is easier for men to deal with anxiety when most live with a woman (mother, daughter, wife) who is taking care of the daily tasks while they spend time managing their anxiety. And, for most readers, this will be a feminist-focused writing, but for me, it is just about stating the facts.
