Case Study: As the midterm elections of 2022 approach this November, and the Presidential election of 2024 looms in the near future, there has begun a pitched battle within our democracy to protect the voting rights of all eligible citizens of this country. With the ratification of the last of the Reconstruction Amendments in 1870, the Fifteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution prohibits the federal government and each state from denying or abridging a citizen's right to vote "on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude." But even after that important voting right's amendment was passed, many states (particularly in the South) continued to disenfranchise (not allow) certain people to vote. After the Voting Rights Act of 1965 was passed at the height of the Civil Rights Movement, it seemed that our nation was finally receptive to allowing every eligible citizen to vote. But, unfortunately now in 2022, it seems that we as a nation are still not ready to do so. New discriminatory and restrictive voting laws have been recently passed in numerous states to once again try to disenfranchise certain voters ... THIS TIME THOSE RESTRICTIONS MAY INCLUDE YOU .... Yes, students have now been included as a group that should be further scrutinized in its ability to vote within certain states (Florida being one of them) ... It may sound improbable and illegal, but it many states it is not at this moment ...

Question:

  1. How are the new proposed laws (many of which have already been enacted laws in several states) specifically attempting to disenfranchise student voters ? (Be specific in your answer)
  2. How might the passage of the For The People Act specifically benefit you as a potential student voter ? (Be specific in your answer)
  3. Why does this matter to you? .... Why does this matter to our democracy ... ?
