Question: In his ethnographic work, Grazian explores the historical and cultural phenomenon of "the zoo" in modern societies. He views this site as a practical space of social gathering, where many social interactions between workers and visitors emerge. But for Grazian, the zoo is also a symbolic site full with signs, gestures, and symbolic messages. His analysis reveals many underlying cultural assumptions, perceptions, beliefs, and worldviews. In a sense, then, the zoo is a "sociological safari," where we come to watch other people (rather than just animals) and get socialized (rather than "just" entertain ourselves and learn about other animals). The animals are just the "excuse" to shape and reinforce cultural worldviews (about "nature," about "society") and social identity (class, parenthood, and more).

Think about another public site where we seemingly do one thing (a practice or ritual with a pretty obvious goal and direct explanation, like "going to the zoo") - but actually, in cultural-sociologist eyes, it is also symbolic site where we transmit and receive cultural messages.

What cultural assumptions are built or maintained in the site you proposed?

What signs (gestures, material objects, languages, rituals) are used and what they convey?

How are social distinctions or boundaries between groups (or sub-groups) reinforced in this site?
