Experimental or Quasi-Experimental Research Mini-Study:
Experimental research designs are used when we as researchers want to establish a causal relationship between our independent and dependent variable. The basic experimental design requires at least two conditions for our participants (usually a treatment or experimental condition and a control condition).
In conducting an experimental research study, researchers will have to establish how they will manipulate their independent variable to see its impact on their dependent variable. The results of this hands-on approach to research design usually means high internal validity (the ability to say that our variables are related in a causal way) at the expense of our ability to capture how this behavior occurs naturally (in other words, most behavior does not take place in a researcher's laboratory).
Our task this week is to propose an experimental design for our research topic. (We will not be actually conducting any experiments-as students of criminal justice we are not qualified ethically to actually involve ourselves with human participants in a hands-on way). The goal of the experimental or quasi-experimental research mini-study is to illustrate how we would, as researchers, answer a question related to our topic by designing a research study.
To do the experimental or quasi-experimental study, please:
1. Start by identifying your research question- what is it that you would like to know about your topic? Identify your variables (independent and dependent), your participants and your sampling technique; and the conditions for your study (i.e. what with the treatment/experimental or control groups do?)
2. Next, describe the data you would like to collect and how it would be used to answer your research question.
3. Discuss the reliability and validity of your design. Do you see any sources of error, or limitations in your design?
4. Finally, address what you would predict would be the results if you were to conduct your study. What would be the difference between the experimental and control groups? How would this difference be useful in answering your research question? What would be the next step-or what would you like to research further as a result of these mini-studies? How might we apply what we would learn from the study to real world behavior, policy making, or criminal justice policies and practices?
Our goal should be for a two-three page review of our prospective mini-study design and its implication for our study and future research.
