Assessment - Horizontal and Vertical Curves

Assessment Part 1

Setting out the centre line of a roadon an embankment

Calculation of the centreline co-ordinates (Easting, Northing and Reduced Level) from the given design parameters.

The centreline co-ordinates are to be set out at multiples of 10 metres of chainage, starting at Point A, Chainage 0.000m, including the tangent points, and continuing to Point B, Chainage 250.000m.The road will eventually continue, in a straight line, towards Point C. Point C does not need to be set out; however, its co-ordinates are to be used to enable you to undertake the calculations.

The design parameters are as follows: -

Point                            mE                   mN                  Chainage

A                                      ?                      ?                    0.000m

TP1                              834.962          2900.218         18.000m

IP1                              892.000          2929.400         N/A

TP2                                    ?                        ?                  ?

TP3                                    ?                        ?                  ?

IP2                              1001.500         2909.750         N/A

TP4                                    ?                        ?                  ?

B                                      ?                        ?                  250.000m

C                                 1080.000         2968.250         ?

The radius for first curve is to be 190m, the radius for second curve is to be 100.000m.

The road has a rising gradient of 3%, starting at ch0.000m and a falling gradient of 2.5% starting at ch 130.000m. The vertical curve begins at ch60.000m and has a total length of 120.000m.

Designed Road Level at ch0.000m is to be 92.900m.
Crossfalls are as follows:
ch. 0.000m to ch.18m 0%
ch. 70.000m +2%
ch. 140.000m to ch.150.000m 0%
ch. 190.000m -2%
ch. 230.000m 0%

The rate of change of crossfall is to be proportional to the change in chainage.

A plus value for the crossfall indicates that, looking along the direction of increasing chainage, the left hand side of the road will be the higher.
