Scenario

1. Advocating for our patients is one of the many priorities of a nurse. In order to achieve this, the nurse must initiate leadership in the care of the patient. Nurses know their patients best when they are actively engaged in the care of their patients. Should the patient experience any conflict with their care, the nurse is usually the first person to be informed before it is passed down to the physician or charge nurse. This set of communication in the chain of command allows the nurse to advocate for the patient with the intention of resolving said conflict.

2. Nurses following hospital protocol and initiating the standard practice rights based on their license is another way of informing health care policy. An example would be protecting the patient's privacy through the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996. This is focused on the patient's right to confidentiality and to the improvement of the portability and continuity of health insurance coverage (Malloch and Porter-O'Grady, 2016).
