Purpose: Planning of the POLC

The parent organization, Great Start Nutrition is making a commitment to a new idealogy; providing green and sustainable products. This commitment aligns with what the company is asking the consulting firm to do and as such it may be time to write a new vision statement to account for this shift and a new mission statement to drive the organization in this direction is needed as well.

In this exercise research can be used for green and sustainable products. Otherwise, you will be only using course material to complete this exercise.

Scenario:

The selection of a location for the new division is complete but now before a new Executive Director is selected, Mayberry Consultants has been asked to consider the initial planning for the new division. There are many factors any organization jumping into a new product line will need to consider. There are several things new leadership will need to consider while planning the future, to include both short and long term plans. Great Start Nutrition will need to begin the process of establishing a strategy for the division specifying goals and objectives to follow to succeed early in the project. However, Great Start Nutrition needs to understand that nothing is possible without the proper personnel in place to see this strategy to fruition.

Mayberry Consultants has been retained to continue its partnership with Great Start Nutrition working on the Infant Formula Division and will continue to work with Helen Crump while the organization continues its search for a new Executive Director. As the team lead, you will be traveling extensively with Helen to the other major divisions spending time with the directors and getting to know their strategies for maintaining a well-oiled group while meeting the company's mission and vision.

Getting to know Great Start Nutrition's leadership teams will be critical as well as doing so will allow the Mayberry Consultants to help with the construction of new mission statement and vision statement for the organization as well as Helen's desire for a more sustainable future by being an environmentally and human-friendly company.

There are several elements that result from the planning stage, one of which is the development of long-term goals. Long-term goals are set by the owners, leaders or upper management depending on the structure, size or type of organization. Long-term goals reflect the big-picture goals and objectives are directly related to the purpose and vision that the leaders and owners develop. In today's change-dominated business environment, long-term goals are set to be accomplished in 2-3 years' time as opposed to the previous century's 5-10 years.

Long-term goals are often created through planning and strategizing. The process begins with the vision and mission of the business. To understand the concepts of vision and mission and role of each in the planning process, you will take the role of the leader and formulate the vision and mission of an organization.

With the addition of a new division and, more importantly, a new product line senior leadership has determined that the current Mission and Vision statements may not be as relevant as they once were. Warren Pfife has tasked you as the team lead from Mayberry Consultants to present a more relevant Mission and Vision statement to reflect Great Start Nutrition's growing presence but also its desire to be a leader in sustainability and green products.

Current Company Vision: To help provide everyone with the healthiest life possible in the most natural of ways.

Current Mission: Our products ensure healthy living and healthy people.

Exercise Instructions:

For this exercise, you will act as the group lead from Mayberry Consultants, assigned to Great Start Nutrition. You will put together a preliminary document so your team can review prior to passing along to Great Start Nutrition.

Step 1: Course Material

Although you are required to research information for this project, you are also accountable for using the course material and case scenario facts to support the ideas, reasoning and conclusions made. Course material use goes beyond defining terms but is used to explain the 'why and how' of a situation. Using one or two in-text citations from the course material in the paper and then relying on Internet source material will not earn many points on an assignment. In fact, Internet resources are limited to the research related to those items under Step 2. A variety of cource material is expected and what is presented must be relevant and applicable to the topic being discussed. Avoid merely making statements but close the loop of the discussion by explaining how something happens or why something happens, which focuses on importance and impact. In closing the loop, you will demonstrate the ability to think clearly and rationally showing an understanding of the logical connections between the ideas presented in a case scenario, the course material and the question(s) being asked.

Step 2: Write an Introduction paragraph

The Introduction paragraph is the first paragraph of the paper and will be used to describe to the reader the intent of the paper explaining the main points covered in the paper. This intent should be understood prior to reading the remainder of the paper so the reader knows exactly what is being covered in the paper.

Write the introduction last to ensure all of the main points are covered.

Step 3: Mission and Vision Statements

Construct a more relevant Mission statement and Vision statement to reflect Great Start Nutrition's growing presence but also its desire to be a leader in sustainability and green products.

In separate paragraphs, explain the reasoning for the changes made to the mission statement and vision statement. Use the course material to support the reasoning. Do not use external source material.
