President Hayes sent troops to stop the rioting after months of strikes. This was the largest number of railroad workers who went on strike because of wage cuts. This was all in July of 1877. The railroad violence was in Pittsburgh, with over 40 people killed by militiamen. This was also known as the Great Railroad Strike of 1877. The economy boomed as it became the world's leading manufacturing nation. Industrialization and mass production were the causes of this rise.
