A new gene scan is developed to detect a certain type of cancer. It is studied in 100 patients who also have the gold standard of a biopsy done. Of the 100 patients studied, 70 turn out to have the cancer. The blood test detects the cancer in 60 of these patients. For the 30 who do not have cancer, the blood test is negative in 20 of them.
