All people are impacted by the rise of AI, but the benefits of AI can be withheld from certain groups by barriers to access the AI and the method in which the AI is developed. Since the implementation of algorithms, there are a number of examples of AI inheriting or developing bias from the developers or the data it receives. According to a study that exposed an AI to human language, it developed biases often seen in society; "if we build an intelligent system that learns enough about the properties of language to be able to understand and produce it, in the process it will also acquire historic cultural associations, some of which can be objectionable" (Caliskan, Bryson, & Narayanan, 2016, p. 10). This could have detrimental effects in a number of ways, from AI being used in sentencing or parole hearings in criminal justice or to health outcomes for traditionally underserved populations.
