Soil Slope Stability Assignment

An excavation is made as shown in the figure below, where the soil properties are as follows: Top Layer: c' = 20 kPa, Φ' = 24^o, γ = 18.0 kN/m³ Middle Layer: c' = 15 kPa, Φ' = 26^o, γ = 19.0 kN/m³ Bottom Layer: c' = 10 kPa, Φ' = 22^o, γ = 19.5 kN/m³

Divide the soil mass into 20 slices and evaluate the minimum safety factor (ignore the tension crack) using:

(a) the ordinary (Fellenious) method of slices; (b) Bishop's simplified method of slices. Your solution should be conducted using the software package SLOPE/W (the software is available on BB and brief user manual is enclosed). You should submit your answers in a form of design report that should include the following information:
• Introduction
• Methodology:

A- Theoretical basis of (a) the ordinary (Fellenious) method of slices; (b) Bishop's simplified method of slices.

B- A brief on the SLOPE/W software. Details on the steps required for model representation, considering problem details. A table with all input parameters and values plus the final model of the problem.

• Results (for both methods) :

A- The critical slip circle, its factor of safety, its coordinates and the area of soil enclosed within the critical slip circle.

B- The safety factor contours.

C- The force polygon and forces acting on two selected slices (No. 1 and 10)

D- Find the critical slip circle, its factor of safety and its coordinates assuming water table is not exist within the slope (model and solve for Bishop's simplified method only).

• Discussion and Conclusion: (Assess the stability of the slope in light of the obtained results - discuss the difference in results obtained using Bishop and Fellenious methods- discuss the impact of water on the stability of the slope/w ...etc)
