First-hand and eye-witness perspectives

Assignment Help History

Primary sources provide first-hand/eye-witness perspectives on the subject matter the historian is studying. Primary sources might include documents, artifacts, or media. In order to be considered a primary source, the source must have been created during the time period under study or by someone with direct knowledge of the subject. In short, primary sources are pieces of history.

Interpreting and analyzing primary sources is the most important part of a historian's job. The are three key things every historian must consider as a part of this process:

1. SOURCE: Who created this source? Why? What does it actually say? What's "written" between the lines?

2. CONTEXT: What events led to the creation of this source? What outcomes did it produce?

3. ANALYSIS: How does this source help us better understand the past? Does it reflect continuity or change over time?
