Project: Using R for Chapters 1-4

Goal: Exploring Correlation and Regression

In this project, you will use graphical and statistical methods to describe the various variables of the data gathered with your class on the color of Skittles in a package. This is a cumulative project, so make sure to keep a copy of your work as you go along.

Step 1. Be sure to get the Excel file that has the results from our class. Be sure to save this file and any other files you may need on your computer.

Step 2. Open RStudio and import the data.

Step 3. Let's get ready to work with our file by attaching the data. If you called the data MyData you can do this by typing attach(MyData)

Let's begin the assignment!

1. Import and attach our data on the number of colored Skittles per bag. Also, open and source the R program "Sixnumbersummary" (You will need this for calculations in a few steps).

2. Open up the Project I Excel Worksheet and put your ID Number in cell C1.

3. Find the total number of Skittles in our data and put the answer in cell G1.

4. Find the number of Skittles in your sample and put the answer in cell K1.

5. Find the total number of Skittles of each color and place the corresponding answers in cells C5:G5.

6. Enter the number of each colored Skittles you had in your sample and place the corresponding answers in cells C8:G8.

7. Find the relative frequency of the total number of Skittles by color. Leave your answer as a decimal and round to four decimal places. Place the corresponding answers in cells K5:O5.

8. Find the relative frequency of your sample of Skittles by color. Leave your answer as a decimal and round to four decimal places. Place the corresponding answers in cells K8:O8.

9. Find the mean, standard deviation, min, Q1, median, Q3, max, IQR for each color and place the corresponding values in cells D11:H18. Leave your answer as a decimal and round to four decimal places.

10. Create a single plot picture that contains a pie chart of the relative frequency of the total number of Skittles by color, and a pie chart of the relative frequency of your sample by color. Be sure each pie chart has a title and the corresponding colors are labeled. Paste the chart in the corresponding area of the Excel sheet.

11. Create a single plot picture that contains the histogram of the frequencies of each color. Be sure to make a title, and standardize and label the axes. Paste the chart in the corresponding area of the Excel sheet.

12. Create a histogram of the total Skittles per bag. Be sure to make a title and label the axes. Paste the chart in the corresponding area of the Excel sheet.

13. Create a comparative boxplot of the total number of Skittles by color and title it "Distribution of Skittles by Color". Be sure to label the axes. Paste the chart in the corresponding area of the Excel sheet.

14. Create a comparative bar chart of the mean number of Skittles by color and the data you got for your sample. Be sure to include a legend. Paste the chart in the corresponding area of the Excel sheet.

15. Answer the questions/prompts on the data you have collected below. Limit all responses to 5 sentences.

 16. Save your Excel sheet and this document as "Last Name, First Name - Project I"

Questions:

1. Write a conclusion about the picture you created in Step 10. Does it show us anything interesting? Explain.

2. Write a conclusion about the picture you created in Step 11. Does it show us anything interesting? Explain.

3. Write a conclusion about the picture you created in Step 12. Does it show us anything interesting? Explain.

4. Write a conclusion about the picture you created in Step 13. Does it show us anything interesting? Explain.

5. Write a conclusion about the picture you created in Step 14. Does it show us anything interesting? Explain.

6. Which chart was better to get information about the distribution of each color? Explain.

7. BONUS QUESTION: The answer must be perfect to get any points.

a. Write a plan about how you would choose the bags of Skittles if you wanted to minimize any issues with your data.

b. If we are trying to find how many Skittles are in a 2.17oz bag, are we conducting an observational study or an experiment? Explain.
