Title - Computational Fluid Dynamics

Requirement - need to use ANSYS-CFX software together with the Engineering Equation Solver (EES) software to complete various apects.

- the structure for the report is in atteched file (by the email i will Send the voice record for the lecture related to this )

Background

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is now rapidly becoming one of the most sought after skills by large and small industries alike. It has been estimated that effective use of simulation software can reduce costs of design implementations by up to 80%. In particularly ANSYS-Inc are the world leaders in production, training and hence use of CFD. This assignment therefore will afford candidates the opportunity to engage in basic level training in which build on both the Thermodynamics [1] and fluid mechanics [3, 4] work from over the last couple of semesters. In the first part of this assessment for learning [2] assignment, candidates will be exposed to essential training in the use of the ANSYS-CFX software. As well as provide an opportunity to become more involved in research oriented work [4] resident with in the school of Engineering.

Tasks

Where possible the sections of the final submission (i.e. excluding the aforementioned title page) should not exceed ten sides of A4. Any extra material not directly related to the demonstration/achievement of the module descriptor learning outcomes should be included in an appendix of the final report. Candidates are advised to refer to relevant literature and/or class/lecture material and focus on the module aims being explored [5, 6]. It is the purpose of the final report to demonstrate to what learning has taken place throughout the assessment process and what module learning outcomes have been achieved [2].

1. Air enters through a 25mm orifice in to an engine with a capacity of 1800 cc/cycle and a design speed of 3600 cycles/minute at standard conditions.

(a) Use the EES software to calculate the design volumetric flow rate in SI units.

(b) Use the equation of state of an ideal gas in order to approximate the value of the specific volume at the inlet.

(c) Hence find the mass flow rate of air into the engine.(d) If the velocity needs to be restricted to 150 [m/s] estimate the diameter of the restriction.

2. Hence use ANSYS-CFX to model a Venturi test, with the inlet and outlet diameters of 50mm and 40mm respectively, used for setting up the engine intake. Evaluate the average velocities at the centre and end of the device if a laser dopier reading at the inlet indicates a velocity of 25 [m/s].

3. Write-up all of your analytical and CFD modelling findings in an accepted manner (using no more 3000 words), producing a laboratory report which contains the following sections:

-Introduction
- What is CFD and why is it useful here?
- Details of assumptions.

-Theory
- Control volume and incompressible flow equations.
- Differential analysis and CFD.

-Methods
- Control volume analysis: that is, application of theory presented in the previous section.
- Description of CFX methods, e.g. geometry generation, meshing, solution protocols etc.

-Results
- Plots of velocity, pressure, density and pressure of flows.
- Use of CFD to solve this problem to get the average velocity at the centre of the Venturi.

-Discussion
- Consisting of a reflective essay on what learning you feel has taken place during assignment.
-Conclusions
- Any technical findings from the numerical and analytical modelling together with a suitable critique of results.
