A glass thermometer has a mass of 38 g and reads 18°C. It is then fully immersed in 140 g of hot water and allowed to come to thermal equilibrium. Its temperature now reads 38°C.
(a) Find the amount of energy Qg absorbed by the glass thermometer during this temperature increase. [Treat the thermometer as entirely made of glass with a specific heat cg= 840 J/kg/K.]
(b) Assuming no energy is lost to the environment, use conservation of energy to write down a number for the energy lost by the water Qw. Then use the usual equation to show that the initial temperature of the water must have been about 39.1°C or 312.1 K. Assume that the specific heat of water is 4186 J/kg/K.
A sphere of radius R is uniformly charged to a total charge of Q. It is made to spin about an axis that passes through its center with an angular speed ω. Find the magnitude of the resulting magnetic field at the center of the sphere.
