Saturated steam (at 20 bar) is used to heat up a toluene stream from 40oC, 1 bar to 150oC, 1 bar in a heat exchanger. The toluene stream is flowing at a rate of 100 kg/min. Steam leaves the heat exchanger as a saturated liquid at 20 bar. Draw a sketch of this system. Make sure you list your assumptions. Find the following:
a) The outlet volumetric flow of toluene from this process in m3/hr.
b) The amount of heat required to heat up the toluene in kW.
c) The mass flow rate of steam that is required to heat up the toluene in kg/hr.
d) The volumetric flowrate of steam at the inlet conditions in m3/hr.
e) What is the approximate maximum temperature you could heat the toluene to with the steam (at 20 bar)? Why?
f) Heat exchangers can be arranged in either counter current mode (where the hot and cold fluids are fed at opposite ends of the heat exchanger) or co-current mode (where the hot and cold fluids are fed at the same inlet as the heat exchanger). Sketch each option and discuss whether you think counter current or co-current is more effective?
determine diameter of 200 m section commercial steel pipe (darcy's friction factor f = 0.0115) that carries a flow of 0.24 m^3/s and allowable head loss ove the section is 3.5 m.
Water flows through the pipe contraction shown. for the given 0.2 m difference in the meter level, determine the flowrate as a function of the diameter of the small pipe, D.

Solid waste will be applied in 0.6 m "lifts" and will be compacted to a depth of 0.3 m. Daily cover soil will be applied to a depth of 0.15 m for the first four days of the operation in any week. At the end of the fifth day, a "weekly cover" layer..
The aluminium wire has a radius of 1.1mm. What must be the radius of the steel wire if it is to stretch the same distance as the aluminium wire, so that the two wires maintain equal lengths after the masses are attached?
How many moles of aluminum do 5.2×1024 aluminum atoms represent?
A four-lane freeway (two lanes in each direction) is on mountainous terrain with 11-ft lanes, a 5-ft right-side shoulder, interchange spacing of one every 10 miles, and a 60-mi/h base free-flow speed.
find the pressure required to fill the container when the height of the fluid is h = 0.75m at both point 1 (intake 1) and 2 (intake 2). Assume the air is at atmospheric pressure until the water level passes intake 2 (at h = 0.5m) and the air follo..
