You have a small pond in your back yard and it has a pH of 7.0 and an alkalinity of 10-3. What are the concentrations of all the carbonite species ( assuming the carbonite system dominates). Is the pond in equilibrium with the atmosphere? Your neighbor has a pond with the same pH and alkalinity, but is lined with a calcite surface. Determine the concentrations of Ca2+, HCO3-, CO32-, and H2CO3. Examine the charge balance and comment on what else your neighbor may be doing to his pond.
