Consider a circular cylinder which is pressed 'end on' against a flat surface of the same material.

(a) Find an equivalent geometry of a cracked body where the asymptotic crack-tip fields are the same as those around the contact zone boundary between the cylinder and the flat surface.

(b) Determine the distribution of crack-tip fields using fracture mechanics solutions and compare them with the solutions given in any monograph on contact mechanics. Show that they are equal in the asymptotic limit.
