Defendant Thompson - Reckless Injury to a Person Defendant Thompson has been arrested for a felony crime - "throwing objects from an overpass" - that resulted in injury to a passenger of a vehicle. Mr. Thompson is a 19-year-old college freshman. He and another college friend had prepared shredded paper in their school color for a homecoming football game. While walking across an overpass over the interstate highway, he and another student decided to throw some of the shredded paper, which was held in black plastic trash bags. They proceeded to cut open a bag and pour the paper down on the vehicles. When they cut into a second bag and poured the contents onto the passing vehicles, they were unaware that a brick had been put into the bag for weight. The brick struck the windshield of a vehicle, causing the windshield to break and chip; a piece of the glass flew into the eye of the victim, causing permanent loss of vision. Mr. Thompson has a prior misdemeanor for theft when he was 17. He received a one-year diversionary sentence for that offense which he completed just six months ago. He is not employed and is a full-time.
