What is the viability of this post's suggested solutions? Unfortunately, the city of Memphis, Tennessee is facing a crisis such as this. More and more we are seeing individuals that are facing serious mental health concerns, tossed around the justice system in hopes that continuous incarceration or supervision will deter the underlying issues. However, ignoring the root cause of problems will never be the solution. Mental health has become a scarcity for several different reasons, but the main one is funding. Governmental funding for mental health institutions is very limited due to several different policies enacted by President Ronald Reagan (Roberts, 2013). However, there are several different options on fighting back. The first is grant funding. Although the government only allots a specific dollar amount towards mental health in the medical budgets, there are several different accounts that have money for grant approved businesses. If a mental health rehabilitation center were to be funded by a federal grant as start up money and then obtain private donors to cover other expenses, then we would be able to create more places for individuals to receive the necessary treatment. Secondly, so much money is spent on new prisons and prison updates.
