Assignment:
After reading the chapters on kinship and family, please choose at least one of the following topics to discuss:
1. Marriage and its Role in Society
The United States has a high divorce rate, and many people are exploring alternative living arrangements. Some argue that marriage is no longer necessary, while others believe it will persist as long as human beings do.
Discussion Questions: What is your opinion on this issue? Do you believe marriage is still important in today's society, or has it become obsolete? Why or why not? Are you married, or do you plan to marry in the future? If so, why? If not, why not? Do you think people delay marriage because of economic challenges, personal goals, or other reasons (e.g., enjoying life or career focus)?
2. Endogamy vs. Exogamy in Family Expectations
In every family, parents often have expectations about the people their children choose to marry, even if these expectations are not always expressed directly.
Discussion Questions: Does your family have endogamous expectations for you (e.g., preferences about race, ethnicity, religion, or social class in a potential spouse)? Would your parents be open to you marrying someone outside your social "box," or do they expect you to marry within a similar background? Please share your thoughts on whether these expectations exist in your family.
3. Living Arrangements and Family Structure
If you are already married or plan to marry in the future, would you prefer a neolocal residence and a nuclear family (living independently from both sets of parents)? Why or why not? Alternatively, would you prefer to live with your parents (patrilocal or matrilocal residence) or in an extended family household? Are there any advantages to living in an extended family structure, and if so, what are they?
A forum post should be a thoughtful entry of a minimum of four hundred words in response to my questions.
