Research Materials: Confine your research to the sources that I provided. All of the sources used in the course, the textbook, Encounters and Traditions, as well as other class materials can be used.In addition, for this assignment, I have included additional web-based sources for your use. These are comprised of both primary and secondary sources. The list of primary sources is extensive, but each one is rather short, usually a page or less. They serve to illustrate the positions and policies taken by either side in this debate. Refer to these and use them to support your points in your paper.Keep in mind that we are exploring the historical development of church and state relations in Western society. Matters of faith and religious belief except as they pertain to the claims of authority of the Roman authorities are not in question here and are not to be the subject of this paper. All we are concerned with is how and why the positions of the Papacy and the secular rulers of Europe changed during this period.

Methodology: I recommend that you start with your secondary sources beginning with the textbook, class materials, and the online secondary sources. As you read through these, construct a timeline so you can keep key figures and events in their proper sequence. After you have a pretty firm concept of the timeline and major developments, turn to the primary sources to enhance your understanding of the issues. You are required to adhere to the sources provided. As you state your points, cite these sources following MLA guidelines. Bringing in information from unauthorized sources will result in a lowering of your grade.

A Note on Primary Sources: When we are reading primary sources, we are reading words written in "foreign", and sometimes, defunct, languages spoken centuries ago. Moreover, the translations into English that we have today may have been made as long ago as the 19th or early 20th centuries. While they should be perfectly understandable to the modern student, the vocabulary and syntax may be daunting. You may need to read sources more than once to gain an understanding.

Working with both primary and secondary sources, explain how and why the relationship between Church and State changed during this 500-year period. What was the relationship between Church and State around 1000 CE and what was the relationship in 1500?
