Energy Regulation Using Music
As you review the techniques presented in Chapter 13 for energy management, you'll notice that music can be used to both relax and energize us. In general, researchers find that classical, instrumental, or more slowly-paced music leads to enhanced relaxation, while faster-paced, percussive, and frenetic music leads to increased levels of energy.
During the early part of Week 3, make conscious choices with your music selections in order to test the ideas presented in your text. Choose at least 1 song that should lead to a more highly relaxed state and another that should lead to a more energized state. Deliberately listen to those songs at pre-determined times of day (e.g., driving to work, at the gym, before bed, in the shower, etc.). Share your experiences and reflections with the other students.
Arousal-Performance Relationships
In Chapter 12, you learned a number of theories explaining the arousal-performance relationship. Given your experiences in sport, academics, or other types of arousal-producing situations, which theory seems to be most applicable? Although you are discussing your opinion, you must offer both theoretical evidence from the text and personal examples to support your selection of one theory over another.
