Problem
The "Path Dependent Fleet" at Obuasi-South Deep
Obuasi-South has operated for 30 years using a diesel-heavy extraction model. The company possesses deep firm-specific competencies in maintaining diesel hydraulics; their mechanics are the best in the Ashanti region, and their supply chain is optimized for diesel fuel. However, their global headquarters has mandated a "Green Gold" initiative that requires a 40% reduction in carbon emissions by 2028. The General Manager, Kofi, wants to introduce Electric Vehicles (EVs) underground. He faces resistance: the engineering team argues that the mine's ventilation and maintenance routines are built for diesel. They mention that the company is "increasingly good at doing what it did in the past" (economies of scale). The company is, however, trapped in a technological trajectory that is path-dependent. While they have excellent operational capabilities, they lack the dynamic capabilities to reconfigure their resources for the EV transition. Recent attempts to test EVs failed because the "knowledge base" of the company rejected the new technology (e.g., lack of charging infrastructure planning).
1. Explain why Obuasi-South's current competence is acting as a "core rigidity" rather than a dynamic capability. Get the instant assignment help.
2. Propose a strategy to develop the dynamic capabilities required to break this path dependency. Your strategy must include a plan for "reconfiguring" the existing knowledge base (mechanics and engineers) instead of firing them.
