When Edward 'Blackie' Christian found himself with nothing to do fter leaving New Forest All Age School in Manchester, he decided to start a fried fish and dumpling affair between himself and a fisherman at Alligator Pond fishing village in Manchester. That was the early and humble beginnings of what is now popularly known as Little Ochie.

The affair has since blossomed into a sophisticated seafood yard by the seaside, just above the Alligator Pond town square. Complete with wooden benches in brightly painted thatched roof shacks, 'Little Ochie' as the place is now called, is a favourite hangout spot for fish patrons from all over the island. Now the Alligator Pond location sees droves of customers, coming from all corners of Jamaica and around the world, to enjoy the simple and delicious fare.

Menu and atmosphere   Little Ochie serves a seemingly endless supply of fish and other seafood, prepared in the way the customer's request. Patrons can choose from fish (fried, brown stewed, steamed and roasted); shrimp, conch and octopus prepared as stew; crab, and lobster prepared in garlic butter sauce, or curried, roasted, barbequed or simply boiled and served with fresh vegetables and lime juice. The dishes are served with a choice of steamed bammy and festival; potatoes a-plenty in a sauce made rich with pumpkins and carrots.

The restaurant's atmosphere is rustic and scented with pimento wood which seasons both the air and the food. The silver sand beach, the trademark boat which serves as an eating area and huts with their thatched roofs ensure a unique dining experience.

Little Ochie is also in expansion mode. In the distant future Edward Christian is thinking of franchising, having already started a satellite location in Mandeville. He is also looking at opening branches in Montego Bay, Ocho Rios and Negril.
